A View From Above

Goodbye, beautiful Montana

Time to Fly Home

I was nervous flying from Billings to Seattle on one of these smaller planes,
but all went well, and we made it there and then on to Phoenix safe and sound.

Temple #3: Billings, Montana

Just for you, buddy...

Your favorite restaurant in Jamestown
There was a Dish satellite atop our hotel in Jamestown.
This van was parked at our hotel in Billings.
You may be wondering why these photos would make Cael so happy. The McDonald's one is pretty evident,
but why Dish Network?
Cael is very observant, and he knows we have Dish Network at home. Lately, he has been noticing who also has Dish and who does not. He is pleased with those who have the same satellite service that we do, and he tells those who do not that they need to get it.
He is a funny boy.

Montana ~ State #43...Yippee!

7 More to Go

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

North Dakota Badlands

Meanwhile, back in Arizona...

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...

A Cow Named Sue

We spotted this large milk cow on a hilltop in North Dakota.
We had to drive up from the interstate to check her out.
Paul tried to get some fresh milk.
Kindred Spirits
This is what we call organic.
A panoramic view

Temple #2: Bismarck, North Dakota

Frontier Village: A Trip Back in Time

We stayed in Jamestown for the night, the home of the Jamestown Jimmies,
where Paul played basketball for 2 years and graduated.
We spent some time the next morning at Frontier Village,
a museum of sorts, where we had a great time snapping some pics.
Yeehaw!
I love me some overalls.
Finally- a chair TOO big for Paul.
Shout out to all teachers- past and present
Paul was happy to see this place.
What? Do you see something behind me?
Even Paul looks little next to this giant buffalo.
The law eventually caught up to me...
Out of all the pictures we sent, this one excited Cael the most.
Mom in jail?!
His current obsession with being a cop made him love this even more.

North Dakota: State #42- Woohoo!

Since we have been married,
I had not been to a new state.
As getting to all 50 states is my goal,
I may have made some comments
about not making progress on this dream
for the last 6 years.
Paul was happy to help me cross
North Dakota off my list and
shut me up about it. :)

Meanwhile, back in Arizona...

Cael was still swimming (with Brooke), and
donning a black cape.

Temple #1: Minneapolis-St.Paul

Squeaky Cheese

My friend, Brandee, told me I had to try squeaky cheese, or cheese curds, while I was in Wisconsin. I must admit I was a bit skeptical about these little drops, but I figured the best place to be adventurous was at the "Cheese Curd Capital of Wisconsin," the Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery.

I tried one, then two, and three, and then I bought some to take on the road. Not only do they have great, fresh flavor, but they also provide music as you chew. It didn't take me long to discover why Brandee called it squeaky cheese. Squeak it did.

Finding a Family Name in Cheese Land

We found Paul's Mom's last name while we were searching for a cheese place.
Isn't he cheesy?

Meanwhile, back in Arizona...

Cael was in Holbrook for the week,
swimming and getting spoiled.

Scenic Wisconsin

On our way from Menomonie
back to Minneapolis-St. Paul,
we came across some gems on the road less traveled.

Lake Menomin

We enjoyed an evening walk along Lake Menomin,
posing and workin' it (in Paul's case).

University of Wisconsin-Stout

Paul's conference was at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
It is a beautiful campus in the heart of Menomonie
and a short drive from our hotel.
I especially liked the clock tower on campus.
I was brave wearing my Redskins' shirt in Packer country.

Aren't we cute?

Enjoying the Band

The Perfect Slice of Americana

Following our meal at Ted's, we went to Wilson Park to enjoy an outdoor concert by the Ludington Guard Band, a community band celebrating its 125th year. This is not just a small group of people; it is a full-on performance band that sounds great.

If this is not the ultimate picture of Mayberry, I don't know what is. Under a ramada, a women's church group has a dozen types of pie for sale, $1.50 per slice. I got strawberry and Paul lemon meringue. Paul compared his to his grandma's, the ultimate compliment. Mine was also mouth-wateringly satisfying.

People arrived as the sun began to set, sitting on the pre-set-up benches or bringing their own chairs from home. Greetings abounded among neighbors and friends, as this summer tradition kicked off for the season. The band tuned its instruments and excitement filled the air. We couldn't wipe the smiles off our faces, and we started to brainstorm how we could move here to be a part of this feeling all the time. Then, we remembered that there was a thing called winter here in the upper Midwest, and we amended our plan to having a summer home in Menomonie.

The band played, we tapped our toes and shook our shoulders to the beat (just for you, Mom), and we drank in the atmosphere slowly and thoughtfully.

Thank you, Menomonie and the Ludington Guard Band, for a never-to-be-forgotten experience.
